Die deutsche Billigfluglinie Air Berlin übernimmt die österreichische NIKI Luftfahrt GmbH.
Die Low-Cost-Airline NIKI mit Sitz in Wien wurde 2003 von Niki Lauda gegründet. Im Jänner 2004 übernahm die Air Berlin einen 24%-igen Anteil, im Juli 2010 erhöhte sie den Anteil auf 49,9 %. Die Mehrheit von 50,1 % hielt bis November 2011 die NL Holding GmbH, die zu 100 % Eigentum der Privatstiftung Lauda ist. Nun wurden auch diese restlichen 50,1 % an Berlin Air übergeben.
Niki Lauda gab am 8. November 2011 bekannt, als Vorstand von NIKI zurückzutreten. Er wird einen Posten im Verwaltungsrat der Air Berlin einnehmen. Der Markenname soll erhalten bleiben, und NIKI Luftfahrt soll ein österreichisches Unternehmen bleiben. Dadurch können Start- und Landerechte in Österreich gewährleistet werden.
Mit der Erweiterung nach Österreich möchte Air Berlin an Einfluss auf den Märkten Osteuropas gewinnen, so Air-Berlin-Chef Mehdorn. NIKI führt z.B. Billigflüge nach Sofia, Belgrad, Moskau oder Bukarest. Es werden hauptsächlich europäische Städte angeflogen, sowie Urlaubsziele am Mittelmeer. Viele Flüge wurden schon bisher im Codesharing mit Air Berlin durchgeführt.
